About the event

Phil is a computational scientist at the National Synchrotron Light Source II at Brookhaven National Laboratory (BNL), where he develops AI and robotics for accelerated discovery at large scale scientific user facilities.  Concurrent with his career at BNL, Phil developed the AI platform for a therapeutics startup, BigHat Biosciences. Prior to this, he built the brain on the world’s first mobile robotic scientist at the Materials Innovation Factory in Liverpool, UK.

A chemical and biological engineering major at UB, Maffettone is a 2013 winner of the prestigious Marshall Scholarship and a recipient of the Barry M. Goldwater Scholarship. Upon graduating with honors from UB, Phil continued his education and his rugby at Oxford University earning his PhD in 2018.  In addition to playing both 7's and 15's for the UBRFC, in his junior year Phil founded an annual volunteer service trip to the Dominican Republic through the Honors Student Council, where he and other UB students helped teach English to children in a program that continues to this day at UB.

Phil will speak with us about his time at UB as a student and a member of UB Rugby, his cutting edge post graduate research in AI and machine learning and his current work at Brookhaven Laboratory.
